RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

The Aims and Objects of the Movement are: -

  (i)

To practice, teach and propagate the religion of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and the authentic Sunnah or practices of the Holy prophet Mohammed (P. B. 0. H) and for that purpose to establish Mosque and Institutions from time to time and in such places within and outside Nigeria as the National Executive Council may decide.

(ii) To reform the Muslim world spiritually, morally, socially and intellectually
(iii) To promote Islamic and secular education through the establishment of schools and educational institutions

In pursuit of these aims and objects the Movement introduced some innovations into the practice of the religion which were before it was founded were not vogue.

Some of the new introductions were as follows: -

  (1) That men should not prostrate and women should not go down on their knees when they greet their parents, Elders, and Obas which hitherto has been the practice and custom in the Yoruba Land as signs of respect for such Elders.
  (2) That Khutbat the Friday Sermon should be explained to the congregation in the language they speak and understand.
  (3) That women are not banned from entering the Mosques to pray.
  (4) That in solemnization of Marriage - Nikai both the bride and bride - groom should be present when the marriage is being solemnized by the Imam or Priest.
  (5) That there was no Quranic injunction preventing the taking of coffin into the Mosque for the Janazza that is the funeral service for a deceased person,
b. No injunction that burial with coffin is unlawful or unislamic.
c. Nor unlawful either for women going to the cemetery to witness the burial of a relation.

These new changes introduced met a lot of opposition with the orthodox Muslims. But by and large as
times went by people began to realise and embrace the new changes.
When the Movement was established Brother Kasumu Rufai Ajose was made the Imam of the
Organisation.

He was the first Chief Imam from 1916- 1941. After the death of Chief Imam Kasumu Rufai Ajose who was the first Chief Imam of the Movement, Alhaji Chief Imam Ashafa Bokini Tijani became Chief Imam and he was formally turbaned in 1943.
