| As you would have read in the opening
pages of this Website there was a great conflict between Islamic
Education and the Euro-Christian Education.
There was the fear that the surest way to convert our people
to Christianity is via the so called Western Education.
This Notion was the main reason why the young Men of the
Muslim Elites founded the Ahmadiyya which metamorphosed
into Ahmadiyya Movement of in Islam of Nigeria.
The name was changed in 1974 to ANWAR - UL ISLAM MOVEMENT
OF NIGERIA.
From the beginning one of the principal aim and object of
the Movement was to promote Islamic and secular education
through the establishment of schools and education institutions.
The Movement to wit Anwar - ul Islam Movement of Nigeria
was the first Islamic organisation to establishment a Muslim
Primary School in 1922 at Elegbata named as the “Talimul
Islam Ahmadiyya Primary School” in Lagos.
There were other Primary Schools established by the Movement
in other parts of the Country namely Epe, Agege, Ibadan and
Benin City some of them already listed above as part of the
achievements of late President Jibril Martin.
It was also due largely to the efforts of Late President
Jibril Martin that the Anwar - ul Islam Movement of
Nigeria then Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam Nigeria that Secondary
School was established in 1948 at Olushi named as” Saka
Tinubu Memorial Ahmadiyya High School”.
Thc first Principal of the Secondary School was a Ghanaian
Mr. J.J Thompson Hagan who after a brief spell of time left
and followed by the appointment of Frederick Duncan Sotubo
who was hired from the Methodist Boys High School, Lagos.
The Movement realized that to achieve its set objectives
it was necessary to have trained teachers of its own hence
the Movement embarked on the training of teachers especially
Muslims.
Some of those that benefited for the Primary Schools included
Alhaji Nosiru Egberongbe, our present National Chief Imam
A.B. Yoosuf, Alhaji H.A. Hakeem Habeeb.
In the case of the Secondary Schools, the requirement of
the Government is to have Graduate Principal for such Schools
to be established
and as the Movement had no Graduate Muslim to head it, the
Movement had to employ the Graduates available first Mr.
J.J. Thompson Haggan and later Frederick Duncan Sotubo.
But in order to overcome this difficult of Graduates the
Movement decided to train Muslims by offering scholarship
to Muslim Students to go abroad to study to a Degree Level.
Those who benefited when the scheme was introduced in 1948
included Alhaji Rabiu Balogun, Alhaji
Rasheed Folami, Alhaji Abdul Ganiu Abdul Razak, now a Lawyer
and S.A.N., Alhaja Azeezat
Gbadamosi (nee Animashawun) Alhaji Jimoh Adisa Gbadamosi,
Mrs. Sekinat Davies (nee Tinubu) and
Mr. Waheed Ajao Oshodi now retired Justice of High Court
of Lagos State.
The Movement in pursuit of its aim and objective of promoting
secular education established other Secondary Schools in
other parts of Nigeria to wit Ahmadiyya Grammar School, Eleiyele,
Ibadan.
Apart from the first School at Olushi which was established
in 1948 others were to follow in other parts of Lagos like
Surulere.
In the pursuit of Education to which the Movement took up
as an important assignment during the tenure of President
Jibril Martin, he was assisted by other leading members of
the Movement.
In this regard mention must be made of Pa. B.D. Oshodi,
Issa A. Williams, Y.P.O. Shodeinde, A.T. Adele, N.B. Kenku
who all served in various capacities to bring to fruition
the lofty ideas and efforts of the Movement in the field
of Education.
Also to be mentioned is the Late Alhaji Amodu Rufai Ajala
who donated his farmland and house at Ojokoro, Agege to the
Movement.
The Movement bought additional land to the one donated by
Alhaji Ajala on which the Movement established a Grade III
Teacher Training College in 1953.
When the Government abolished Grade III Teacher Training
Colleges, the Movement sought permission to establish a Girls Secondary School there which was granted.
Thus the Anwar - ul Islam Girls High School, Ojokoro was
established were well managed and the
Schools achieved Excellence and won many laurels.
The Schools have produced eminent citizens in various disciplines
over the years.
Just to mention a few it is on record that the first Secondary
School - Saka Tinubu Memorial high
School whose name was changed to Ahmadiyya College, now Anwar
- ul Islam Model College, Agege
has turned out Legal Luminaries like Hon. Justice Y.O. Adio
JSC (of Blessed Memory) his brother Hon.
Justice MA. Adio former Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice
I.A. Olorunnimbe, formerly of the High
Court of Lagos State, Hon. Justice F.A. Adeyinka, Judge of
the High Court of Lagos State.
The College has turned out brilliant Scholars like Doctors,
Engineers Bankers and in various other fields.
The current Deputy Governor of Lagos State His Excellency
Femi Pedro is in fact one of the Eminent product of the College.
Tremendous progress has been made over the years by the
Movement in the running of the Schools founded by the Movement
until in 1976 the Federal Government took over all Secondary
Schools under the Missions with the sole purpose of ensuring
uniform, qualitative and functional education for the citizen.
That as a result of the take over Lagos State Government
enacted the (Private Secondary Institutions Special Provision
Law Cap. 41 Laws of Lagos State).
Despite a lot of protests from the stake holders on the
take over of Missions Schools the Government did not see
the need to return these Schools to their original owners
until the advent of the government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed
Tinubu, the Executive Governor of Lagos came into office
on the 29th May 1999.
As he has promised during his campaign prior to the Election
that ushered him into the office of Governor he had promised
to return Mission Schools to their original owners.
Indeed by the 2nd October 2001, the Government of Asiwaju
Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned 48 Schools to the Missions and
Private individuals whose Schools were taken over by Government
in 1976.
The Movement shall ever be grateful to His Excellency Asiwaju
Bola Ahmed Tinubu for return of 10 Schools to us Anwar -
ul Islam Movement of Nigeria.
Indeed of all the 12 members of the Association of Muslim
Proprietor of Secondary Schools, Anwar - ul
Movement of Nigeria was the only Muslim Organisation to
take back its own Schools from the
Government.
Whilst others believe it was foolhardy to take back those
schools after 25 years of decay in some of the infract-structure
and a lot of moral decadence and indiscipline in those Schools,
the Movement is proud to raise its head high for being able
to turn things round for the better in just two years although
there remains a lot still to be done.
Since the Return of the 10 Schools to the Movement a lot
of achievement have taken place particularly in
the area of examination success in the West African School
Certificate Examinations where now
Students have started scoring Credits in 9 subjects, 8, 7,
6, and 5 respectively in good number as against
Fail and mere Pass of the past.
The Movement from the beginning was out to promote Islamic
and secular education through the establishment of Schools
and educational institutions.
With over 50 years experience in the field of Education,
it is our Mission to ensure as follows: -
| |
(i) |
To give our Students every opportunity to develop
themselves so as to be able to discover their personal
ability and potential within conducive surrounding.
|
| |
(ii) |
To ensure at all times to inculcate in our Students
the spirit of Excellence, morally, physically and academically
as the future leaders of tomorrow. |
| |
(iii) |
To inculcate in our Students honesty and hard work
without which success could be achieved. |
