JIBRIL MARTIN

The third President of the Movement was the Late Jibril Martin.
He was born into an illustrious Family in Lagos on 20th November 1888.

Jibril Martin was a man of many parts, a Lawyer, Politician and a very devoted and devout Muslim.

In the annals of the Movement he played very prominent and distinguished roles.
In 1934, he was elected as one of the Trustees.
In 1940 after the death of Saka Tinubu, the Late Jibril Martin became the President of the
Movement.

As President, one of his first act was to set up an Education Committee to formulate the Movement Policy on:

(i) Establishment of Schools both Primary and Secondary
(ii) Staffing of the Schools and also award of Scholarships to deserving students either Moslems or Christians.

In the pursuit of the two Policies above - mentioned the Late Jibril Martin undertook a tour of the Middle East particularly the Islamic Countries in company of Alhaji B. D. Oshodi. He visited Sudan, Iraq, Egypt and other places in the interest of Islamic Education.

Shortly, after his return from the tour of Middle East in 1946, he went to perform the Hajj -Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina.

He seized the opportunity to visit Jerusalem and to discuss with the Government of Saudi Arabia on the possibility of sending students to their Arabic Colleges.

His efforts mentioned above resulted in the establishment of the first Muslim Secondary School which was built at Olushi by the Movement on three plots of land one donated by him, the other by N. B. Kenku and the third which belongs to the Movement with the building thereon that served as the take off for Saka Tinubu Memorial High School, Olushi in 1948.

During his Presidency, the Educational Programme of the Movement witnessed giant strides and achievements because as a result of his relentless efforts the following were established.

The Late President Jibril Martin expended all his energies, resources and wealth for the betterment and progress of the Movement which he led from 1940 until his death in Mecca on 13th June, 1959. In his will he devised and bequeathed money and land to the Movement particularly the land at Oju - Elegba which is in a good and Commercial Area of Yaba.

It can be said without any exaggeration that of all the Past Presidents of the Movement the Late Jibril Martin will never be forgotten so easily on account of his dedication, hardwork, tenacity of purpose, devotion to duty and the affairs of the Movement, a devout, distinguished and erudite scholar and an accomplished Muslim, coupled with his personal and financial sacrifice to the Course of Islam and the Movement in particular.
